Unraveling the Mysteries
The mummies found in the vault had little identification or information about where they had come from. How could researchers bring their stories to light?
Since the discovery of the mummies in 2004, a group of researchers known as the German Mummy Project has worked to solve the mysteries behind these mummies and others in European museums.
The German Mummy Project has used the most advanced techniques of 21st century science, including forensic methods never before used to study mummies. The team has solved many of these mummies’ mysteries without unwrapping or damaging them—unimaginable just 25 years ago.
We invite you to view Mummies of the World through the lens of science. Much has been revealed through DNA analysis, computer tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, radiocarbon dating, and more.
Yet questions still remain.
